FEANTSA Administrative Council member Laura Guijarro, from Sant Joan de Déu, and Albert Sales, currently working for deputy mayor of Barcelona Laia Ortiz, have composed an article outlining the rise of chronic housing exclusion in Barcelona. The article links the astronomical rise in rents in Barcelona and the growing eviction rate as contributing to social exclusion. While Barcelona’s high rate of eviction is believed to not correlate directly to rising homelessness, the article states that the associated difficulty in accessing to stable housing can increase risk of poverty and social exclusion. This in turn creates a cycle of chronic housing exclusion which is only set to grow unless rising rents are radically addressed. Read the article in full here.
