6th August 2010: France Still Violating Travellers’ Housing Rights
The decision of France’s President, Nicolas Sarkozy, to “close illegal Roma and Traveller camps and deport illegal migrants” has once again highlighted France’s inadequate response to the needs of Roma people and Travellers. French municipalities’ own failings may force people to set up illegal camps in the first place and risk eviction, while plans to create fixed stopping places for Travellers could help guarantee the right to housing for all.
14th April 2010: “We all have a responsibility” - Commissioner László Andor discusses how the EU can effectively contribute to the fight against homelessness at the launch of FEANTSA’s ‘Ending Homelessness’ Campaign at the European Parliament László Andor, Commissioner responsible for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, today presented opportunities for ambitious EU-level action on homelessness to an audience of NGOs, public authorities, MEPs, policy makers and people with experience of homelessness. Commissioner Andor called on Member States to show “commitment” and create “targeted policies” to end homelessness and offered them the European Commission’s support to do so, commenting that homelessness was “one of the most important issues” for those working on employment and social affairs in the European Commission. The Commissioner welcomed the Belgian Presidency’s goal to combat homelessness.
14th April 2010: Launch of FEANTSA 'Ending Homelessness' Campaign
Today, in the framework of the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion, FEANTSA launches a European campaign called ‘Ending Homelessness’. The message of the campaign is that ending homelessness in Europe is both necessary and possible. Managing the problem of homelessness is not enough. It is time to stop investing in reactive, short-term measures and to implement integrated strategies to end homelessness.
