About FEANTSA

FEANTSA, the European Federation of National Organisations working with the Homeless was established in 1989 as a European non-governmental organisation to prevent and alleviate the poverty and social exclusion of people threatened by or living in homelessness.

FEANTSA currently has more than 100 member organisations, working in close to 30 European countries, including 25 EU Member States.  Most of FEANTSA's members are national or regional umbrella organisations of service providers that support homeless people with a wide range of services, including housing, health, employment and social support. They often working in close co-operation with public authorities, social housing providers and other relevant actors.

FEANTSA works closely with the EU institutions, and has consultative status at the Council of Europe and the United Nations.  It receives financial support from the European Commission.

Statement of Values

At the 2005 General Assembly, the members of FEANTSA adopted a statement of values.  It is an important reference document for FEANTSA, its members and its partners, guiding all of FEANTSA's work and activities.  The statement also serves to ensure a high level of coherence in FEANTSA's current and future membership.

Structure

FEANTSA is democratically structured to involve member organisations in as many aspects of its work as possible.  The guiding bodies of FEANTSA are:
  • the General Assembly (involves all member organisations)
  • an Administrative Council (consists of one representative for each EU Member State)
  • an Executive Committee (consists of up to 7 members drawn from the Administrative Council)
FEANTSA has a small office based in Brussels which is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the network.  Please see FEANTSA's organisation chart for more information on its structure and internal functioning.

FEANTSA is committed to:
  • Engage in constant dialogue with the European institutions and national and regional governments to promote the development and implementation of effective measures to fight homelessness.
  • Conduct and promote research and data collection to better understand the nature, extent, causes of, and solutions to, homelessness.
  • Promote and facilitate the exchange of information, experience and good practice between FEANTSA's member organisations and relevant stakeholders with a view to improve policies and practices addressing homelessness.
  • Raise public awareness about the complexity of homelessness and the multidimensional nature of the problems faced by homeless people.
To this end FEANTSA lobbies decision makers, commissions research, writes tools and toolkits, prepares regular policy documents and organises European seminars and conferences, and transnational exchange initiatives.  In addition, FEANTSA runs a number of working groups, in which members discuss and analyse issues such as housing, housing rights, employment, health and social protection, data collection (statistics and indicators) and participation.

On this website you will find information on FEANTSA's members, working groups (see the links above), policy work (listed under FEANTSA themes), events and publications - the annual European Journal of Homelessness, the tri-annual magazine Homeless in Europe, and the monthly newsletter, the Flash.
